Lighted Shadow Box with LED Lighting

A lighted shadow box is a deep frame with the light built into the case, made for objects rather than flat pictures: medals, tickets, dried flowers, small figures. The space between the front and the backboard holds things that have thickness, and LEDs sit inside that space, so the contents are lit by the frame rather than by the room.

Without that light, the top edge of a deep frame casts a shadow across whatever is inside, which is the usual reason a keepsake display looks flat. An unlit box depends on where the room’s light happens to fall; a lit one reads the same at night as at noon. That also makes it work on a dim wall or in a hallway, where an unlit case disappears.

No. Lighted shadow box, illuminated shadow box and LED shadow box are three names for one object: a deep case with lights built into it. Listings use whichever phrase they expect people to search for, and the name on its own tells you nothing about the case.

What matters is where the LEDs sit. In the inner lip they rake across the display from the edges and stay out of sight. In a back panel they shine forward past the objects, which suits flat art but throws anything with depth into silhouette. Depth decides it, then size. Anything up to about 2 in deep suits the Shadow Box, a piece thicker than that needs the deeper Jersey case, and something completely flat belongs in a frame built for flat art. Measure the thickest piece at its highest point, including any clasp, stand or ribbon loop, before you choose.

Size follows from how many pieces share the story, not from how big the largest one is. One object with a couple of companions sits comfortably in 11 × 14. Once there are five or six pieces and you still want linen showing between them, go to 16 × 20.

Start with the objects, not the frame. Lay everything out on a table and see how much space it wants.

Then check the depth. Measure the thickest item at its highest point, including any stand, clasp or ribbon loop, and make sure it sits comfortably inside the 2 in. A good layout comes from trying it before anything is pinned.

1. Make a paper template. Cut a sheet of paper to the size of the backboard and arrange your items on it.
2. Place the main piece first. Put the largest or most meaningful item slightly above the middle, where the eye naturally lands.
3. Build around it. Add smaller pieces in loose groups, and leave some linen showing. A crowded box looks like storage; space makes it look curated.
4. Take a photo of the layout so you can copy it exactly onto the backboard.
5. Transfer the pieces one at a time, heaviest first. Pin through ribbons, loops and edges rather than through the face of anything you want to keep intact.
6. Close the front and switch on the light. Because the LEDs sit around the edges, a tall object can throw a shadow toward the center. If it falls across a flat item, nudge the two apart.

The hinged front means you can open the box and adjust a piece without taking it off the wall, so a layout can change as new keepsakes arrive.

The box runs full color and tunes from 2700 K warm white to 6500 K cool white, with a plain White setting, and dims from 1 to 100%.

• Warm white flatters paper, wood, fabric, dried flowers and older heirlooms.
• Neutral to cool white makes silver medals, chrome and bright plastic look crisp.
• The color scenes suit toys and collectibles, but they change how every object’s own color reads. For anything you want to see as it really is, use the White setting.
• Keep it low for fragile pieces. Dyed fabric, color photos, felt-tip ink and pressed flowers fade faster than most keepsakes, so a dim setting and fewer hours lit help them last.

You can also leave it off. The in-line switch cuts the light and the box hangs as a plain display case, which is what most people want during the day.

The box runs from a USB-C adapter that accepts 100–240 V. It can hang on the wall or stand on a shelf or table; either way, place it where the cord can reach an outlet neatly. For a flat photo that needs no cord at all, Lumi Frames Edge runs on a rechargeable battery.

Both light a display. What differs is where the light comes from. A puck light or a strip stuck inside a box you already own has to go somewhere in the box, usually under the top edge, so it lights the front of the objects and leaves the edge shadow it was meant to fix. Light from the inner lip runs the whole way round, and that is what fills the shadow in.

Three other things tend to settle it:

• The hardware shows. A puck, a battery box or a length of tape inside a case with a clear front becomes part of the display whether you want it there or not. The strip here is hidden in the lip.
• Dimming and white. Stick-on lights usually run at one brightness. This one dims from 1 to 100% and tunes from 2700 K to 6500 K, which is what lets you keep paper and fabric on a low, warm setting.
